Battlefield events precipitating the American Revolution will be retold at the Bosworth Lecture Series on Thursday, June 12 at 6:30PM at the First Congregational Church in Bristol in conjunction with Bristol Fourth of July Committee.  The event is free and open to the public.

 

The presentation by Dr. Stanley D.M. Carpenter, Emeritus Professor of Strategy and Policy at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, is titled "The Great Riot: Lexington, Concord, Bunker Hill, and the Beginnings of the War of American Independence: a 250-Year Anniversary Retrospective."

 

Prof Carpenter will address battlefield events in and near Boston in the spring of 1775 that set the conflict in motion and that concluded by 1783 with the Peace of Paris. He will also cover events on Lexington Green, Concord's Old North Bridge and the British march back to Boston that saw the outbreak of armed conflict. 

 

Additionally, he will address British military reaction in June 1775 with the assault against Patriot fortifications on Breed's and Bunker Hills as well as the establishment of a Continental Army under the command of George Washington.

 

Prof Carpenter retired from USNWC in 2020 after twenty-two years, serving as Strategy and Policy Department Head in the College of Distance Education, and as the Naval War College Command Historian. After thirty years of service, he retired from the US Navy in 2009 with the rank of Captain having served three commanding officer tours and in several senior staff posts.

 

He holds degrees from Florida State University (Ph.D. in British History), the University of St. Andrews in Scotland (M.Litt. in Scottish History) and University of North Carolina (A.B. with Honors in History).

 

Prof Carpenter taught subjects for the Naval War College including Ancient Greek Civilization and Roman Empire, the War of American Independence, 20th century world wars to modern era conflicts. He lectures extensively at public libraries and historical associations throughout New England and beyond. 

 

Most recently, he has served as resident historian onboard Viking Ocean Cruise Line ships and as tour historian for Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours. Currently, he serves as national Historian General and Newport Commandery Commander of the Naval Order of the United States, an organization dedicated to the preservation and advancement of naval and maritime history.

 

He has published extensively on British Civil Wars, the American Revolution and War of American Independence.
He is also the author of several historical fiction novels and short stories. Prof Carpenter will have his most recent books available.

The Roswell S. Bosworth Jr. Lecture Series is presented by the Men's Club, a local organization that pays tribute to its founding member, former editor and publisher of the East Bay Newspapers, with lectures of interest to the public.
